On Getting Published by Mouthfeel Press: Teresa Dovalpage Interviews Maria Miranda Maloney
This interview with Maria Miranda Maloney is part of a Latino Stories interview series between our Columnist, Teresa Dovalpage and Latinx editors, publishers and authors. Maria is Publisher and Executive Editor at Mouthfeel Press. She was born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in a small farm community of mostly immigrant families. She is also the author of The Lost Letters of Mileva (Pandora Lobo Productions Press, 2014) and The City I Love (Ranchos Press, 2011.
Dovalpage: There is a dearth of Spanish-language publishers in the United States. When I heard about your work, I was really excited. We need to spread the word! So let’s start por el principio. What inspired you to create Mouthfeel Press?
Maloney: Establishing Mouthfeel Press was a movimiento and form of activism. I was inspired to publish poets living and writing on the U.S.-Mexico border. In 2009, independent presses were few across this geographical area, and mainstream publishers were not publishing Latinx authors. I recognized the need to publish diverse voices, specifically authors from this region. I had read the seminal work of Gloria Anzaldúa, Borderlands: La Frontera, and decided that Gloria’s work would define my approach to publishing by exemplifying her theoretical framework on identity and language. The geographical niche expanded to underrepresented voices from the U.S. and writers living in the U.S. who write in Spanish only, whose work is in conversation with each other.
Dovalpage: The idea of the conversation is great! Like a giant tertulia. So often Spanish-language authors feel we are having a monologue. Who reads us? Who else is writing like we do? (I say this based on my own experience.) Bueno…what kind of books are you looking for right now to join this conversation?
Maloney: I look for books in conversation with the current socio-political climate, including books with themes of identity, constructed borders, or what Gloria defines as Nepantla–living in-between. I like works that take a risk and are not limited by rules and constraints but are also well-crafted. I realize language is fluid and ever-changing. I love to see language used in elevated, artful ways, respectful of our current social climate. Mostly, I look for books where authenticity is felt. We accept fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. We are working to publish books in translation, too.
Dovalpage: Qué padre. And there is a market for all that. Now, what can readers do to avoid ending up in the Mouthfeel Press slush pile?
Maloney: A manuscript lands ends in the slush pile when it is not relevant to Mouthfeel Press’s mission. I encourage authors to read a publisher’s mission and order a few of their books.
Dovalpage: Excellent advice for all writers, indeed. At this moment, the press is accepting CLASH! Chapbook Series Submissions only. Tell me more about CLASH! Chapbooks.
Maloney: CLASH! Chapbook Series was created in response to the events that took place in 2020. We realize we had to create space for emerging voices writing from a higher political and identity consciousness, and it required a medium that could be produced quicker than a full-length collection, which can often take up several years to publish. Our writers had to come from underrepresented and marginalized communities, BIPOC and LGBTQ+. We returned to Anzaldúa’s work to guide us. Furthermore, Mouthfeel Press has always been in the business of discovering new voices, so we felt the best way to introduce new authors to the rest of the world was by publishing chapbooks.
CLASH! has become a channel for students (undergraduates and graduates) interested in working in the publishing industry. We offer hands-on experience in acquisitions, editorial, and production. The only way to learn publishing is to do publishing. CLASH! was headed by Kimberly Ramos and now Katherine Mobley. The editorial team includes Ilza J. García and designer Karen Dreher.
CLASH! is in its second year of publication, and this year, we received over 200 submissions from writers nationwide. We will publish six chapbooks in 2024.

Dovalpage: En los Estados Unidos hay muy pocas editoriales en español. Cuando me enteré de tu trabajo, me quedé encantada. ¡Ahora hace falta correr la voz! Bueno, empecemos por el principio. ¿Qué te inspiró a crear Mouthfeel Press?
Maloney: Establecer Mouthfeel Press fue un movimiento y una forma de activismo. Me inspiré a publicar a poetas que viven y escriben en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. En 2009, las editoriales independientes eran escasas en esta área geográfica, y las editoriales tradicionales no publicaban autores latinx. Dovalpage: ¡Qué padre! Además de que hay un mercado para todo eso. Ahora, ¿qué pueden hacer los lectores para evitar que sus manuscritos sean rechazados por Mouthfeel Press?
Maloney: Un manuscrito es rechazado cuando no es relevante para la misión de Mouthfeel Press. Animo a los autores a leer la misión de una editorial y pedir algunos de sus libros.
